Lynchburg Grows, a nonprofit organization in Lynchburg, is raising funds to purchase the greenhouses and surrounding acreage owned by H.R. Schenkel, Inc., which was a successful stem rose grower for more than 40 years. The goal of Lynchburg Grows is to have a self-sustaining organic urban farm while providing employment to challenged individuals in Central Virginia. Today, because of the efforts of John Wormuth, Michael Van Ness and many wonderful volunteers who have given many hours of effort, one greenhouse is producing many varieties of lettuce, some annuals that will be blooming for the holidays, and beautiful roses that have been rescued. This is truly a beautiful gift to our community and surrounding neighbors.

Seeing is believing. I encourage you to call 846-5665 to arrange a time to visit. Bring a plastic bag and purchase a fresh mix of greens. You may also be able to purchase a long stem rose or two. More importantly, you will become aware of the efforts that begin with creating compost by using coffee grinds, leaves and wood chips to collecting “worm tea” for nutrients. The results are an edible product and less waste for our landfills.

This organization asks for your support. The future for self-sufficiency is meek unless this organization and other similar one are successful. What a great way for Central Virginia to take care of Central Virginia: setting an example for others to duplicate. Please join this effort. Lynchburg Grows is currently raising funds -- 1,000 contributors giving $1,000 each will allow for the purchase and improvements to the property. A brick with the giver’s name or a memory/honor of their choice will be placed as center flooring in the first greenhouse, which is to be used as an educational center. Please note that all levels of monetary contributions are needed and happily accepted as operating costs expand with planting efforts.
