Here in Lynchburg, more than 80 college students did their part in helping the environment Saturday. Students from Washington and Lee, the University of Richmond, Ferrum College, and Lynchburg College (web) delved into several different projects at Lynchburg Grows.

They weeded flower beds and did other clean-up projects. For Lynchburg college students, it's part of a program where they put in nine-hundred hours of service over the course of two years. Organizers say they are proud of the students' interest in environmental issues.

Lisa Whitaker, Bonner Program "They're looking at all kinds of issues, as to how they can think globally, act locally and they're trying to make a difference where we live and hopefully that will be part of how they create a better world."

About 75 schools across the country participate in the service program, known as the Bonner program.
