Did you know that a Lynchburg business used to be a major player in the flower industry? Saturday volunteers were busy trying to save roses left behind when company closed shop. The plants have been sitting in this greenhouse since 1999 without anybody to water or care for them. Many of the roses are dead but many others survived. The non-profit group Lynchburg Grows owns the greenhouses now. The cleanup is part of rehabilitating them for a good cause. Michael Van Ness, Lynchburg Grows - "What we are doing is turning this urban farm into a facility where not only families can come and buy healthy locally grown produce but it will also serve as a job training facility for disabled individuals and at-risk youth." Members of the Lynchburg Morning Rotary Club gave Lynchburg Grows a $5,000 check Saturday. It's the last installment of a $15,000 donation to the organization. |
