We have been in Greenhouse #3 this week pruning the rose buses. If only that stupid snow (spilling into the background) would go away! (Photo by Aaron Lee)
It was brick cold in Greenhouse #3 this afternoon. But it was great for Micha and Patrick and I to be in there working with Mr. Herman Schenkel Jr., who came by the farm to teach us about pruning back the rose bushes that are dormant now, but which should be bloom-tastic by April. Mr. Schenkel is the son of Herman Schenkel Sr. who bought what is now the LG property in 1954 from the Doyles. The Doyles ran a cut flower operation on the property from 1919 to 1954. Mr. Schenkel is in his upper 70s and he pulled an hour and half shift with us today; explaining the “not-so-much-a-science as it is an art” that is rose pruning. A side note: We have about 800 pepper starters popping up about an inch. 11,200 more to go. – Aaron Lee
