Melt! Melt! Melt! 2/10/10

The worst of the snow/ice weather is over … hopefully for the year. And not a moment too soon because we need the mounds of snow to melt and the ground to dry up sometime soon because not only will Greenhouse #1 and #2 be chock-a-block full of CSA veggies and peppers, but we will also be growing on about 3/4 of an acre out in the field behind the greenhouses. Mostly, it’ll be peppers we’re growing for Appalachian Harvest.
On another note: The most recent LG media coverage came from two local TV stations and the local paper which reported on the snow damage sustained by some of the older and weaker greenhouses over the last month and a half. But thanks to volunteers like long-timer Howard Hall and relative-newbie Thaddeus Williams, Greenhouse #4 (the worst damaged in recent weeks) which was constructed (as best we can tell) in 1919, will stand to fight another year. Williams spent the last couple of weeks shoring up the weak spots in #4 while Hall (who is currently clearing the tangled mess growing in #4) spent time picking up hundreds of pounds in broken glass that crashed in under the weight of the snow. – Aaron Lee
